Cerebral haemodynamics in preterm infants after exposure to dexamethasone

Table 2

Mean (SEM) values averaged over 240 min for the first, third, and fifth doses of dexamethasone. In parenthesis: mean baseline values before dexamethasone

Before dexamethasone (baseline) First dose Third dose Fifth dose p Value2-a
CBF (22.9 (2.0)) 31.1 (2.2) 33.7 (1.9) 36.9 (1.6)2-b 0.0024
CBV (2.3 (0.2)) 3.2 (0.2) 3.3 (0.2) 3.2 (0.2) NS
MAP (47 (3)) 50 (1) 56 (1)2-c 56 (1)2-c 0.001
HR (155 (3)) 154 (1.5) 140 (2)2-c 144 (2.2)2-c 0.001
TcPCO2 (67.6 (10.6)) 56.9 (2.3) 52.2 (1) 47.6 (0.8)2-b 0.001
  • CBF: cerebral blood flow, CBV: cerebral blood volume, MAP: mean arterial blood pressure, HR: heart rate, TcPCO2: transcutaneous PCO2. The values for each variable were calculated by averaging the values measured at 0, 10, 30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 min for the first, third, and fifth doses of dexamethasone administered.

  • 2-a Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of two factors for repeated measurments.

  • 2-b α=0.05 versus first dose (Bonferroni test).

  • 2-c α=0.01 versus first dose (Bonferroni test).
