      Abstract

Based on existing evidence, newer modes of ventilation have not resulted in significant improvements in outcome as initially expected. Nonetheless, their benefits cannot be considered irrelevant. The possible impact of the introduction of these modes and modalities of breath delivery may have been diminished by a concomitant improvement in patient management.
